Open Day for the Scientist Training Programme – Oxford University Hospitals

12th December 2024, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

There are more than 50,000 Clinical Scientists working within the NHS, and they are involved in over 80% of all diagnoses. It is a profession in which you can use your scientific skills and knowledge to improve patient outcomes, participate in research, and have a varied, interesting career.

The Scientist Training Programme is a post-graduate 3-year training programme to become a registered Clinical Scientist, normally working within the NHS.

During the training programmes trainees will be employed by a scientific department in the NHS and be enrolled in a fully funded part time master’s degree with a participating university. During the programme students will have work-based learning from their employer, and academic learning from the University. Trainees are salaried at an NHS Band 6 for the duration of the programme, and once registered will be salaried at an NHS Band 7.

Our open day is tailored to the Medical Physics, Clinical Engineering and Scientific Computing specialties in the STP. We are including an introduction to the STP and clinical science, an introduction to each of the specialisms in Medical Physics: Radiotherapy, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Safety and Diagnostic Radiology, and Non-ionising Imaging, an introduction to scientific computing, presentations from clinical engineers from different Trusts about what they do in their roles, and application advice.

We will be presenting talks from:

  • Clinical scientists working in NHS Trusts,
  • current trainees,
  • National School of Healthcare Science
  • Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM)

There will also be a dedicated Q&A for each specialism and applications advice.
