Speculative Applications
Not all employers advertise job vacancies. We strongly recommend writing letters to employers who are not currently advertising jobs to inquire about possible job opportunities. This is called a speculative application. See our Speculative Application Booklet for guidance.

Job interviews
Interview support
In the recruitment process, you will usually be required to share your CV and cover letter; the next stage may involve attending an interview. An interview is an opportunity for an employer to gain a deeper understanding of your experience, skills, and personality. It also provides you with an opportunity to learn more about the company, the position and work environment. Visit our Interview Support page for further resources, including our AI mock interview tool.
Asking for feedback
If you have been successful in reaching the interview stage of the recruitment process but were unsuccessful in securing the role, you can request feedback from the employer. The employer may be able to offer some insight into your interview technique and explain why you were not selected. You can then use this feedback to apply to future applications. Not all employers will provide feedback, but we encourage students to reach out to employers and ask!
Reasonable adjustments
If you are disabled*, you can request reasonable adjustments to be made throughout the recruitment process and during your employment.
*Under the Equality Act (2010), you are disabled if you have a long-term physical or mental health condition which has lasted or is likely to last 12 months or more and causes a significant impact on your ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities. This can include chronic illnesses, physical and mental health conditions, and neurodivergent conditions.
Under the Equality Act (2010), employers in the UK must make reasonable adjustments for disabled employees. There is no set definition of ‘reasonable’, but adjustments may include:
- Accessing interview questions prior to the interview.
- Making physical adaptations to the building or equipment.
- Changing work hours and offering flexible working arrangements.
- Allowing employees to work from home where possible.
To discuss the topic of reasonable adjustments, book a Career Coaching appointment. The Careers & Employability service is unable to provide legal guidance on what is ‘reasonable’ but can direct you to resources where needed. Visit the Diversity, Equality, and Mental Health hub for further information and support.Career Coaching appointment
