Job search

Before starting your job search, it can be helpful to identify which industries you’re interested in. This will help you tailor and focus your job search. The hidden job market is a phrase used to describe unadvertised posts. This can be common in the creative industry. To find out about potential opportunities that may not be advertised, you may need to send a Speculative Application. Showcasing platforms are important networking tools for the creative industries. This is especially important to graduates with a visual portfolio such as Conservation of Cultural Heritage graduates. Employers use these sites to discover talent. Grad Schemes

A graduate scheme is a structured training programme run by an employer to develop future leaders of an organisation.​ They are relevant for an individual interested in developing a range of experience across an organisation over a specialist route. Schemes can exist in a variety of industries with a high percentage of companies open to any degree discipline. Graduate schemes are usually run by larger businesses, and therefore are not as common in sectors such as History and Heritage, which tend to be made up of more small to medium sized businesses and specialist roles. The examples below demonstrate some schemes open to any degree.

Many employers and organisations advertise opportunities and initiatives to attract candidates from under-represented backgrounds and improve representation within their industry. Creative Access offers a jobs board, training and support to candidates and are working towards a day when Britain’s society is truly reflected in the creative industries.

Historic England Trainee Scheme. Each summer Historic England run a scheme to help to improve this by offering training placements to people with Black, Asian or minority ethnic heritage – one of the sectors most under-represented in the heritage workforce.

Disability Collaborative Network are a group of committed museum professionals have set up the Disability Cooperative Network. We are working with national charities, organisations, people with disabilities, academics, groups, disability networks in other sectors, curators and managers to promote and embed inclusive practice in the heritage and cultural sector.
